Taught by Academy Award nominated and internationally acclaimed filmmaker Scott Hamilton Kennedy, the master class will cover the process of independent documentary production from start to finish. Appropriate for film students, amateur filmmakers or anyone who wants to know how documentaries get made, the course will touch upon the must-have qualities for a successful documentary. Mr. Kennedy will discuss the steps involved in taking an original idea and making it into a successful documentary, including script, funding, pitching ideas, shooting, post-production and distribution. This course is a practical ‘how to’ one, as well as an illuminating look at Mr. Kennedy’s own experiences in conceiving, funding, creating, and selling his own award-winning documentaries.
About Scott Hamilton Kennedy
Writer, director, producer Scott Hamilton Kennedy’s documentary The Garden, tells the story of the nation’s largest community garden, and its complicated struggle for survival. It was nominated for an Academy Award, and won awards and garnered rave reviews around the world. His previous documentary OT: our town, about the first play in 25 years at Dominguez High in Compton, was short listed for an Oscar and received equal critical acclaim. Scott’s film Fame High, premiered at the Tribeca International Film Festival, got digital distribution (through Warner Digital) and then went on to Showtime and Netflix.
We are screening Scott’s latest feature-length documentary, Food Evolution on Friday July 21st @ 6pm. Narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson it explores the global struggle to feed two billion more people by 2050 and to do it without destroying the planet. You can book tickets here
