Fashion Upcycling! Making & Using Natural Dyes at Home

Cupboards full of Colour! Join us for a workshop with fashion designer Rebecca Marsden to discover how to make & use natural dyes at home.

In this workshop, burst out the beetroot and shed those onion skins! Natural dye-making using vegetables and upcycled cotton to create T-shirts and covered notebooks. This workshop is for ages 13+ and an accompanying adult must be in attendance throughout the workshop.

Materials Needed

You will need these materials to follow along with the event;
  • Bowl
  • Stainless steel saucepan
  • Spoon
  • Knife and chopping board
  • Red cabbage, Onions & Beetroot
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • 100% cotton, silk, linen or wool fabric. Up-cycle where you can. You could use masks, t-shirts, scarves or even a bag. Soak fabric overnight in water + 1 tablespoon of salt for better results. 
While we are waiting for the dyes to infuse we will be making a handbound notebook. If you would like to follow along you will also need the following materials:
  • A4 paper- 10 sheets
  • A4 card-1 sheet
  • A5 cardboard- this can be cereal packet or thicker if available
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Hole punch
  • 50cm of twine or wool or embroidery thread  If these are not available at home you can use a stapler
  • Scissors
  • PVA glue

About Rebecca Marsden

Rebecca Marsden is a graduate of the Royal College of Art specialising in Fashion knitwear. Following on from her MA she was selected for the Santoni Pioneer program in Shanghai to further develop her knowledge and understanding of circular and seamless knitting applications.  In recent years Rebecca has worked in an educational capacity, lecturing in Textiles, Fashion and Design.  Her own label has received the ‘IDI’ Award 2016 for Fashion Design, Nissan Brand Ambassador for ‘Generation NeXt’ 2015-2017 ‘Designer of the Year’ and overall ‘Innovation Award’ at the Irish Fashion Innovation.
