Volvelle-Making Workshops
A hands-on workshop exploring paper prototypes and volvelles, a medieval paper construction with moving parts that is often considered an early example of a paper analog computer.
As part of Creative Teen Lab at the Chester Beatty Library, join maker-in-residence Pantea Karimi for a hands-on workshop inspired by volvelles from the Chester Beatty’s collection. Exploring how to build this medieval calculating gadget and learn how to design and combine the layers to create an accurate device that reveals information
Discover function through images, including those from the Chester Beatty’s collection. You will then examine physical examples of the contemporary volvelles before designing your own calculator wheel chart and learning how to use it.
This is a free event but places are limited and early booking is recommended.

About Pantea Karimi:
Meet American-Iranian maker Pantea Karimi who is the maker-in-residence at The Chester Beatty Library in July. Throughout her residency California-based maker Pantea will explore historic Middle Eastern and European scientific manuscripts in the Chester Beatty, deliver a series of workshops for teens and families and co-create learning resources inspired by the collections. Supported by the San Jose Arts and Cultural Exchange grant programme.
